The rumors are true. President Barack Obama will visit POET Biorefining in Macon, Mo. The April 28 tour of the ethanol plant is part of his White House to Main Street Tour” through Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.

 Senators push VEETC extension
Almost a month after Reps. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., and John Shimkus, R-Ill., presented legislation to extend ethanol tax credits and the ethanol tariff, Sens. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa have proposed a Senate version of the ethanol tax credit extension. Like the House bill, Conrad and Grassley’s companion bill to HR 4940, the “Renewable Fuels Reinvestment Act,” proposes an extension of the credits through 2015.

Poet aims high with cellulosic ethanol
Already one of the top ethanol producers of traditional corn ethanol, Poet plans to add 3.5 billion gallons of cellulosic ethanol by 2022, said Jeff Broin, CEO, on April 21 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. That¡¯s more than 20 percent of the cellulosic ethanol mandated by the Renewable Fuels Standard.

N.D. Ethanol Council starts check-off program
The North Dakota Ethanol Council (NDEC) has established a new ‘check-off’ program, reserving a portion of the state’s ethanol production profits for future ethanol promotion. For every gallon of ethanol produced or sold in the state, three one-hundredths of one cent will be put towards research, education programs, promotion and market development for the industry. The Council projects an annual budget equaling $100,000.

Green Plains adds Tennessee grain elevators
Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc. has completed the acquisition process of five grain elevators located in west Tennessee—increasing its grain storage capacity by 63 percent. Green Plains is the fourth largest ethanol producer in the U.S., operating six ethanol plants with a combined capacity of 480 MMgy.
