Senate bill introduced to spur biofuels growth
Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Tim Johnson, D-S.D., introduced new legislation on July 14 with the goal of bolstering the energy sector. Among other things, the Securing America’s Future with Energy and Sustainable Technologies Act, calls for a long-term extension of tax credits for ethanol and biodiesel, incentives for infrastructure and targets for advanced vehicle technologies.

Growth Energy proposes shift in fuel policy
With the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit, set to expire at the end of the year, Growth Energy is calling for a change in the way ethanol tax incentives are used and an eventual phase out of governmental support of ethanol.

 BP buys out Verenium for $98 million
Verenium Corp. announced today that BP Biofuels North America will acquire all of its cellulosic biofuels interests for $98.3 million. The sale includes the pilot- and demonstration-scale cellulosic ethanol facilities in Jennings, La., the research and development facilities in San Diego, and all of the company’s cellulosic enzyme technology.

EPA slashes 2011 cellulosic estimates
After evaluating the market availability of cellulosic biofuels, the U.S. EPA is proposing to lower the 2011 cellulosic biofuels volume target initially established in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) by as much as 24 million gallons.

Race cars run faster, cleaner on ethanol
A group of automotive researchers from the U.S. DOE, Argonne National Laboratory and industry have shown that a fuel-injected racing car engine fueled by E-85, an ethanol-based fuel, outperforms the same engine with a carburetor and leaded racing fuel.

GAO report highlights loan guarantee flaws
In response to a Congressional mandate requiring it to conduct a review of the U.S. DOE’s loan guarantee program, the Government Accountability Office has completed an evaluation of the program and released a report outlining its findings. Several serious flaws were identified with the program, including evidence that the loan process is being implemented inconsistently and that nuclear projects are favored over other proposals.
